How to build strong character (7 Signs)

“Authentic happiness derives from raising the bar for yourself, not rating yourself against others.” – Martin Seligman

Why it works

Martin Seligman (pictured) is an American psychologist, educator, and author.  Widely known as “the father of positive psychology”, he played a major role in shifting psychology’s focus from treating illness to promoting well-being. In an influential paper co-authored with Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in 2000, he wrote that “the aim of positive psychology is to begin to catalyze a change in the focus of psychology from preoccupation only with repairing the worst things in life to also building positive qualities”.

Prof. Seligman’s work emphasizes cultivating character and virtues as the foundation for a meaningful and fulfilling life. In his 2004 book Character Strengths and Virtues: A Handbook and Classification, he outlines six universal virtues: wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence. Supported by research across cultures, these virtues provide a practical framework for understanding and developing the traits that contribute to human thriving.

Taken together, Prof. Seligman’s research shows that we can build strong character through intentional, virtue-driven decisions. Put differently, strong character is not about being perfect, but about making the right choices, one decision at a time. Here are 7 signs of a person with strong character.

How to do it

1) They stand by their word
People with strong character value trust over personal gain. Unlike those who would do anything to get ahead, they understand that standing by their word builds lasting credibility and meaningful relationships.

2) They own their mistakes
People with strong character know that they mess up at times. Unlike those who deny their errors to maintain a flawless image, they own their mistakes, embracing them as opportunities to improve.

3) They practice self-control
People with strong character have intense emotions, just like every human does. Unlike those who let emotions take over, they consciously manage their reactions to stay composed and effective in any situation.

4) They act with integrity
People with strong character know they aren’t perfect. Unlike those who hide their weaknesses, they embrace their humanity, acting with integrity even when it’s not easy or convenient.

5) They keep an open mind
People with strong character follow the mantra of “strong opinions, loosely held.” Unlike those who cling rigidly to their beliefs, they welcome fresh perspectives and see change as a path to growth.

6) They face challenges with courage
People with strong character are scared at times. Unlike those who shy away from difficulties, they face them head-on, demonstrating that courage is about taking action despite uncertainty or fear.

7) They treat everyone with respect
People with strong character know that they’re not above others. Unlike those who act superior, they respect the inherent dignity of every individual, promoting equality and mutual respect in all their interactions.

In a world of shortcuts, character is the long game that always wins.
